So You’re Stuck in Traffic?

So You’re Stuck in Traffic?

Time is an unrenewable commodity. Once it’s gone, you can never replace it.

The real question is what are you doing with your time?

Each day the average American spends between one and two hours driving to and from work. Yearly we spend well over 300 hours of our lives in our car. It’s the equivalent of 38 work days of driving. Another way to look at it is 13 straight 24 hour days.

We Spend a Lot of Time Commuting

The average commute in the U.S is 45 minutes, with New Yorkers having the longest trek to work with an average 73-minute commute. Chicagoans came in second spending 64 minutes a day commuting, followed by San Francisco residents with 56 minutes, while those in Los Angeles have an average 55-minute commute, according to CNN Money. The Real Reason Why You’re Broke | Part 2

People will tell you what’s on their mind if you ask.  A few weeks ago I asked this question on Facebook:

As you pursue your journey towards success, what obstacle, challenge, or problem keeps reoccurring that you’d like to resolve?

Overwhelmingly, the reoccurring challenge was financial. Since my personal vision is helping people get from here to there, the first step towards getting to your “there” is clearly defining where you are now. Recently, I shared the first reason why you’re broke is because you don’t have a budget. Remember, money without a direction will disappear. You can read it HERE. Now that you’ve caught your breath, let’s talk about the next reason why you’re broke…bad habits.

We Negotiate, We Demonstrate, We Resist | Why You Should Have a Personal Mission Statement

Most churches have mission statements.  Corporations and businesses have mission statements.  Mission statements are meant to infuse an organization with long-term vision and set the tone for all company goals, accomplishments and efforts.  So, what’s a mission statement?

What is a Mission Statement

A mission statement acts as an invisible hand that guides the people in the organization. It explains the organization’s reason for being, and answers the question, “What business are we in?” However, a personal mission statement is different. And there’s a scene from the movie Selma illustrates the power of having a personal mission statement.

The scene takes place in the social hall of Brown Chapel AME Church in Selma, Alabama.  Two Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee college students are being taken to task by Southern Christian Leadership Conference leader Reverend C.T. Vivian as Coretta Scott King looks on.  And then a voice from the back of the room speaks. “That’s enough,” reprimands Martin Luther King Jr.  “Enough of this, now.  I don’t have time for this.  None of us got the time for this.  The way our organization works is simple:

We negotiate, we demonstrate, we resist.

We raise white consciousness.  And in particular, the consciousness of whichever white man happens to be sitting in the Oval Office.”

4 Keys To Productivity In 2013

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to read David Allen’s book, Getting Things Done.  Above all, his book taught how yesterday’s methods just don’t work. We now live in an information society and are constantly bombarded with new information.

In order to be more effective in 2013, we must work smarter… not harder. Allen’s premise is simple:

Our productivity is directly proportional to our ability to relax.  Only when our minds are clear and all thoughts are organized can we achieve effective productivity and unleash our creative potential.

Although I read the book a few years ago, I ran across this video and it gave me a refresher on how to be more productive in 2013.

Thank you TEDx for providing this talk about “Stress-Free Productivity.”

How I Used My iPhone To Prepare A Message In 10 Minutes

I finished last week’s post mentioning how how I used my iPhone, Cloud Storage, and a few Apps to prepare messages in 10 minutes or less. Let’s face it – there’s no way we can escape technology. It’s here to stay and we may as well leverage it for the glory of God. Furthermore, given the consumerist mindset of most church goers, presenting a real and relevant word (grounded in biblical truth) remains challenging. Communicators must learn to quickly “size” up their audience and adjust their message for maximum impact. I had to do this this earlier this year while preaching at another church.

As a pastor, I’m invited to preach at other churches during their pastoral or church anniversaries. While worshiping, God begin to impress upon my heart that the message I prepared wasn’t quite right for the occasion. I quickly discerned the room was filled with broken people who had looks of despair in their eyes. I came to encourage the pastor, but discerned that the people needed a Word from the Lord. I prayed and God revealed they need encouragement, healing, and empowerment. I opened my Bible, pulled out my iPhone 4, placed it in my Bible (to hide it), and began crafting a “NEW” message.

Temptation's Trying To Rule Me

Today, I received an email from Apple encouraging me to reserve or pre-order my iPad.  Honestly, the more I learn about this device, the more tempted I become.  I am beginning to think this could be a game-changer.

Check out this new ad:

Temptation is real…

Temptation always appeals to the vulnerable part of your heart.  The taste will be palatable, persistent and powerful.

Don’t believe me, ask Adam & Eve:

“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” (Genesis 3:6)

Temptation is…

  1. Enticing – It appeals to your hopes and desires (I plan to use the iPad to preach & teach…yea right).
  2. Enjoyable – It promises you immense pleasure (I can see myself smiling as I use my iPad).
  3. Evasive – It evades the truth with excuses (My heart is telling my head to find a reason to justify the purchase).
  4. Escalating – It multiplies your appetite for more (If I don’t control it now, my desire for more will increase…darn it).

Ok, so did I talk myself out of purchasing one…to be continued 😀

Do you plan to purchase an iPad?  If so, why?  If not, why?
