According to the Phobia List, there are OVER 2000 “CONFIRMED” fears.

Phobias are emotional and physical reactions to feared objects or situations. Symptoms of a phobia include the following: Feelings of panic, dread, horror, or terror. Recognition that the fear goes beyond normal boundaries and the actual threat of danger.

Fears are mostly learned behaviors and this process can often start in a mother’s womb. Unborn children pick up on their mother’s responses to situations. This is known as innate learning and can become naturally inborn fears.

It appears there are only TWO fears we are born with:

  1. The fear of LOUD NOISES – (We question how sound affects and impacts a growing baby, after all we can make judgment, see, hear and sense sound. A baby has little insight of this)
  2. The fear of FALLING – (Giving birth is about gravity, and often baby’s can spend a long amount of time upside down, no wonder this is classed as a fear we are born with)

Therefore, if we can learn them, we can unlearn them.

What is your greatest fear?

Whether you’ve been asked this question directly or not, you have certainly asked it of yourself. Or maybe you refuse to ask it because, well, you fear the answer.  Believe it or not, some people fear success. They fear that when they get to next level, they may not be as successful as they were before.

The Bible says this:
God has not given us a spirit of  fear, but A spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Fear does not come from God, and God wants to replace our fear with faith. “Our imaginations are powerful machines. They have a great way of spinning possible scenarios out of control. They play into the fears that have taken root in our hearts and minds, pouring gasoline and igniting them into a raging fire,” according to Ben Reed.

We live in a success-oriented culture, and we don’t give much thought to the fact that success can be downright scary. We’re used to seeing fear as the enemy, so we do our best to ignore it and move on.

As Hugh MacLeod points out, Success is more complex than failure.  On some level, it’s more comfortable to stay in a familiar situation, even if it doesn’t feel great on the surface. But achieving success (however you define it) means you are entering uncharted territory. You are putting yourself out there to be scrutinized and criticized, and exposing yourself to new pressures and demands.

Although the idea of success can be scary, the reality is easier to cope with than what you had before. If you’ve been resourceful enough to keep yourself going during the tough times, you’ll presumably be able to do the same with the good times.

Here are three excellent blog posts on fearing success, and what to do about them.

7 Questions to Ask Yourself When Facing Fear

I’ve watched fear keep many people from achieving all God would have them achieve. I’ve watched fear keep a guy from pursuing the girl of his dreams. I’ve watched fear drive people to the safe side, rather than to assume the risk required to pursue their dreams. Fear is the enemy of progress.

What are your fears keeping you from doing?

Fear is universal. It crosses all boundaries of race, culture, religion and generation. We all feel fear. So why do some people appear to be fearless, doing battle with enemies that others cower before? Because they recognize that the greatest enemy they face is the fear itself. The first battle every hero faces is against fear and its weapons of destruction.
